Reflection

BBefore FIU, I was aware of diversity and people with different backgrounds. But once I attended FIU, I learned what it actually meant. The FIU community is full of people with different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. As a student with Venezuelan parents, I was glad to see the diversity which pushed me to learn more about people and their different perspectives. From there, I decided to start the Global Medallion experience and courses to expand my knowledge.

With the help of global learning courses and experience, I was able to learn about cultures around Europe, Asia, and different parts of the world. It is incredible how diversity works and how diverse the world is and we do not even know about it. Learning about international issues, and cultures and watching and engaging with people allowed me to understand a little more. We tend to grow with one set of perspectives from our family but these experiences allow everyone to see more.

The exposure to different backgrounds challenged me to research and find more information on multiple countries and how society works. The Global Learning experience helped me to work with people that have different opinions than mine which helps to bring amazing ideas together. For example, being involved on the board of a student organization you have to learn how to hear people's opinions and how to work around them because we don't all think the same. I have taken away many lessons and learning opportunities from the program.
